Scotlynn International Farm Workers Join OPP in Historic Community Soccer Match

This past Sunday, some of Scotlynn’s international farm workers proudly took part in a truly memorable event in Simcoe; the first-ever soccer match between local international farm workers and the Norfolk County OPP.  

Organized in partnership with Catholic Community Services of York Region (CCSYR) and the Norfolk County OPP, the day was all about strengthening community ties and celebrating the vital contributions of international farm workers to our region. The event featured friendly soccer matches between farms, a spirited tug-of-war competition, emergency vehicle displays, local organization booths, and the much-anticipated return of the Jerk Chicken Eating Contest. 

“The impact and importance of these types of events is tremendous for international farm employees. Having a safe space to let loose, relax and have fun is important to us all.” said Leanne Arnal, Director of Norfolk Community in Action. “Team building, morale, a sense of belonging and coming together in unity is paramount to the growth of our community.” 

Held at the Norfolk County Youth Soccer Park, the event brought together farms, families, and first responders for an afternoon of fun, food, and camaraderie. With over 1,000 attendees throughout the day, the park buzzed with energy and connection, making it a true celebration of community spirit. 

“We were so proud to represent Scotlynn in this fun match.” said Marco, International Farm Worker, Scotlynn SweetPac. “It means a lot to be included by the community, and feel supported by our local OPP.” 

The highlight of the day was the feature match, where a combined team of international farm workers — including three proud representatives from Scotlynn — faced off against the Norfolk County OPP. The energy on the field was electric, and the camaraderie between players and spectators alike was a powerful reminder of the strength found in community. In a thrilling display of teamwork and determination, the farm workers emerged victorious, earning cheers and applause from an enthusiastic crowd.
